johnmcdonald > On Day 3, we left Hite at about 6:30 for the 52-mile ride to Hanksville.
johnmcdonald > After crossing Lake Powell, there are a couple of short, steep hills--the road goes up from the lake, back down to lake level, up and down, then finally starts a more gradual ascent.
johnmcdonald > There's a scenic viewpoint off the highway that overlooks Lake Powell. This is as close as Ken would get to the edge of the cliff.
johnmcdonald > Hite Marina is on the left of the picture, with the boat ramp in the middle of the picture. After several years of drought, the boat ramp doesn't go to the water any more.
johnmcdonald > Ken took this picture of me--look for the purple pixel, about a quarter of the way in from the right. This is what the scenery was like for the first 30 miles or so of today's ride. There's a rest area marked on the maps, about 20 miles from Hite, called Hog Springs; it has picnic tables and pit toilets, but no water.
johnmcdonald > After the intersection with highway 276, the scenery was less spectacular. There was also a lot of traffic, people hauling big boats back from Bullfrog Marina on a Sunday afternoon. It was the only time on the whole trip that traffic was annoying, or even noticable.
johnmcdonald > Hanksville is very small. There are three motels, but two are closed on Sunday, so we stayed in the Best Value Inn, which was fine. There's a fast food place/convenience store, a grocery store, and one restaurant.
Our ride the next day was about 50 miles.
johnmcdonald > We got breakfast food at the convenience store the night before, and we got going at sunrise, about 6:30. We saw one car every half hour or so.
johnmcdonald > The first part of the ride was through a barren moonscape of crumbly gray rock.
