johnmcdonald > We went uphill the entire day, very gently at first, then steeper towards the end. This is looking back down a hill.

johnmcdonald > If this were in Maryland, it would have been the first national monument, and people would come from miles around to see it. Here it's just a couple of rocks by the side of the highway.
We passed a couple of national chain hotels that were isolated in the desert about 2 miles east of Torrey, and I'm very glad we didn't stay in them. Instead, we stayed in the Capitol Reef Inn and Cafe. We got there at about 1, and as I was putting my key in the door, I felt the first drop of rain. Then the sky opened up and we had a huge thunderstorm. It was warm enough that riding in the rain wouldn't have been bad, but the lightning would have been scary. The cafe was an excellent restaurant, and we had lunch and dinner there.

johnmcdonald > On day 5, we rode from Torrey to Escalante. It was a medium-length day, about 65 miles, with lots of climbing.

johnmcdonald > The day started with a long uphill that was quite steep in places. We saw almost no traffic. At one point, there were a bunch of cows in the middle of the road, next to a fenced-in cow pasture with more cows in it. The cows in the road got spooked by us and scattered in every direction. Two of them actually jumped over the 4-foot-high fence.

johnmcdonald > We stopped partway up the hill and looked back towards Capitol Reef.

johnmcdonald > Here's the high point of our trip. Luckily, neither of us seems to suffer from altitude sickness.

johnmcdonald > Ken was happy that we were done with the big climb.
