johnmcdonald > Near the bottom of the Navajo Loop trail, hikers have piled up little rocks into a cluster of cairns. Vandalism, or folk art?
johnmcdonald > The hoodoos form when a cap of hard rock prevents the softer rock directly underneath it from eroding.
johnmcdonald > I kept telling Ken, you can't capture "looming" in a photograph, but he kept trying. Go to http://kendunn.smugmug.com to see how his pictures turned out.
johnmcdonald > More hoodoos.
johnmcdonald > Which is redder, the rocks or my nose?
johnmcdonald > We had planned to ride our bikes to Cedar City via Cedar Breaks National Monument the next day, but after comparing the elevation profile to what we'd already ridden, we decided it wouldn't be much fun. It would have involved climbing 4,000 feet to a peak of 10,500 feet above sea level, then a harrowing steep twisty descent. Ken's friend Bob (Ruby's grandson) made some calls and got his nephew Lance to pick us up at 11 and give us and our bikes a ride to Cedar City. Since we had a few more hours in Bryce Canyon, we took the shuttle to Bryce Point again and walked along the rim trail to Sunset Point.
johnmcdonald > The hoodoos, arches, windows, etc. all looked even more incredible in the morning sunlight.
johnmcdonald > After our last look at Bryce Canyon, we took the shuttle back to the motel, and got a ride with Lance to Cedar City. The hills looked long and steep going up, the weather was chilly and it rained a bit, and the descent was even steeper and twistier than we'd feared. So we'd made the right decision.
