johnmcdonald > On Sunday, July 29, my dad picked me (and my bicycle) up in Baltimore on his way back from an Appalachian Trail meeting in New Jersey. We drove down to his house in Hendersonville, North Carolina. On Tuesday, we went hiking. Our first hike was along a new section of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail that his hiking club is building. Here he is on a bridge that he designed and helped to build.
johnmcdonald > Here's my dad looking at some orange mushrooms.
johnmcdonald > Here's a closeup of the mushrooms.
johnmcdonald > That same day, we hiked in the Graveyard Fields area. Here I am next to a waterfall.
johnmcdonald > This year, my dad finished this room in his basement and built this beautiful pool table. Most of the wood is cherry from a tree he cut down to make way for a new Appalachian Trail shelter that he designed and helped to build. After the shelter was done, he cut up the cherry log into rough planks with his chain saw, hauled the lumber out of the woods, dried it for a few months, then made a pool table out of it.
johnmcdonald > My dad and I played a bunch of pool. We're equally good (or equally bad, depending on how you look at it).
johnmcdonald > On Wednesday, Aug. 1, I got on my bike and left my dad's house. I went up US 25 to the Blue Ridge Parkway. US 25 isn't very scenic (this picture is downtown Fletcher at rush hour), but it's flat and safe.
johnmcdonald > Once I was on the Parkway, I went up and up and up. Here's the first of many pictures of ridges getting lighter blue as they recede into the distance.
johnmcdonald > The road surface was generally excellent. There's no paved shoulder, but that wasn't a problem--except for short stretches near Asheville and Roanoke, there was very little traffic.
