In late March-early April, 2009, Bev and I went to Oregon and Washington. We collected amphipods and saw the sights.

johnmcdonald > After flying to Portland, we drove to Florence on tiny, curvy roads through the Coast Range. Bev loves trillium, so when we saw some beside the road, we stopped and took pictures.
johnmcdonald > We spent several days in Florence, going out at night and at dawn to collect the amphipod crustacean Megalorchestia californiana ("sand hoppers"). This beach is in Oregon Dunes National Seashore, at the mouth of the Siuslaw River. We dug holes and put plastic cups in them, then added a little water. Amphipods would hop around looking for food, then fall into the cups. We ended up going back to this beach four times before we got enough amphipods.
johnmcdonald > Here I am at dawn on my 50th birthday. I'd collected amphipods at these beaches 26 years ago, when I was a grad student at Oregon State. Now I want to see if there have been genetic changes to the populations resulting from the warming climate. Bev and I collected amphipods last year, but I had problems getting the gels to work well. This year it's going to work!
johnmcdonald > We celebrated my birthday with a trip to a bowling alley in Florence, followed by dinner at an excellent little restaurant. I won the other game.
