johnmcdonald > In June, 2008, Bev and I, along with our friends Shirley and Toni, rented a house in Salvo, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We'd previously stayed in Kill Devil Hills; Salvo is smaller and quieter. There weren't very many people on the beach.
johnmcdonald > We spent most of our time sitting on the beach, watching the waves and reading. I was the only one in our group to go swimming. I went swimming at night, too, and the last couple of nights, the phosphorescence was amazing.
johnmcdonald > There were some jellyfish washed up on the beach. I bumped into them in the water several times, but only got slightly stung once.
johnmcdonald > Another washed-up jellyfish.
johnmcdonald > There were lots of these crabs on the beach. They'd pop out of their burrows, scurry around looking for food, then go back into their burrows.
johnmcdonald > Bev and Shirley had to leave a couple of days early, so I got them to drop my off about 9 miles north of Salvo, so I could walk back along the beach. About half of the walk was in Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, so I had the beach almost entirely to myself. I saw a couple of refuge volunteers drive by, then they stopped at the fresh sea turtle nest. Here you can see the tracks of the turtle coming out and then going back into the water.
johnmcdonald > Here are the turtle tracks leading to the nest.
johnmcdonald > I left the volunteers here at the nest and continued walking south. A mile or two later, I came across one of the volunteers and a ranger. The ranger decided that this part of the beach was too narrow, so there was too great a risk of the eggs getting washed into the ocean. So they dug the eggs up and reburied them in a wider part of the beach that already had one turtle nest. The ranger told me that they only get 8 to 14 turtle nests all summer over the entire island, so I was pretty lucky to see one.
