Bev and I go amphipod hunting.

johnmcdonald > In late March-early April 2008, Bev and I went to Washington and Oregon. We spent the first few days with our friend Rhoda, who lives near Seattle, and her dog Bear. That's me holding Bear, with Rhoda behind me.
johnmcdonald > Here's a close-up of Bear. The picture's a little fuzzy, but then, so is Bear.
johnmcdonald > This sign reminded us of our cat Gus, although he will never have Guslings, never goes outside to cross the street, and is not a duck.
johnmcdonald > On Saturday night, we took the ferry across Puget Sound to Fort Worden State Park, just north of Port Townsend, to collect amphipods. I collected amphipods at this spot in 1983 for my master's thesis, and I wanted to see if gene frequencies have changed since then due to global warming. We collected the amphipods by putting plastic cups in the sand with a little water in them; at night, the amphipods come out, hop around in search of food, and fall into the cups. This is Rhoda and I putting the cups in the sand.
johnmcdonald > While we were waiting for amphipods to fall into plastic cups, we went into Port Townsend, looked at some art galleries, and had dinner. There were a bunch of deer right in the residential part of town.
johnmcdonald > Here's a deer in someone's yard.
johnmcdonald > Bev and I spent some time driving around Seattle. Here's an apartment building on Capitol Hill where Bev lived in the early 1980s.
johnmcdonald > When my mom and dad were first married, they lived in a fourplex on Minor Avenue, a couple blocks from Lake Union. It may have been this one.
