johnmcdonald > This turkey was standing by the side of the road.
johnmcdonald > It flew away.
johnmcdonald > Whenever I drive by layers of sedimentary rocks, I want to stop and look for fossils, but it's always either a freeway where I can't stop, or I'm in too much of a hurry. I had several hours until night fell and it was amphipod-hunting time, and this was as far from a freeway as you could get and still be paved, so I pulled over and looked.
johnmcdonald > There were some nondescript bits of fossilized leaves.
johnmcdonald > And these things, which I think are fossils, but I don't know what they're fossils of.
johnmcdonald > After a successful night of amphipod hunting at Coos Bay, the Umpqua River, and the Siuslaw River, I headed north along the coast. I posed these amphipods (chilled in ice water, for better cooperation) with a slide rule that I won in a sixth-grade math contest. After much manipulation, this became the banner photo for my online Handbook of Biological Statistics.
johnmcdonald > On my way up the coast, I stopped at Beverly Beach. We went there when I was a young kid, and somewhere I think I still have the fossil snail I found that day. Here's a rock on the beach with some fossil bivalves in it.
johnmcdonald > I also stopped at Boiler Bay to look at tide pools. A lot of people do research projects there, so I had to step carefully around various tags (like the red one in the background of this picture), plexiglass plates, etc.). This picture shows a bunch of mussels (Mytilus californianus).
johnmcdonald > I only saw a few starfish. People have been swept off the rocks by waves at Boiler Bay, so I was cautious not to go too far out.
