johnmcdonald > Ken and I flew to Bozeman, Montana on Friday, July 18, 2008. The next day, we shipped our bike boxes to our final destinations (Billings for Ken, Sheridan for me), then we did a day ride up Bridger Canyon Road. Here's Ken taking a picture.
johnmcdonald > The road was gently uphill most of the way, but we had a tailwind. Of course, that meant we had a headwind coming back down, so we couldn't just coast down.
johnmcdonald > Here's the view looking back down the valley.
johnmcdonald > And here's the view from near the top. The total for the day was about 44 miles for the round trip, going from 4800 to 6300 feet elevation. This short trip was a good way to get acclimated to the elevation before we got started for real.
johnmcdonald > On Sunday we rode from Bozeman west on state route 84, then south on US route 287 to Ennis. The shoulder on route 84 had about one foot of smooth pavement between the rumble strips and the edge, which was kind of harrowing. When we got down to the Madison River, shown here with pelicans, the shoulder disappeared and the traffic picked up.
johnmcdonald > The Madison River.
johnmcdonald > Once we got on US 287, the shoulder was wider and the scenery was drier.
johnmcdonald > These might be sandhill cranes. The total mileage from Bozeman to Ennis was 53.6 miles, which we did at an average speed of 14.1 mph. We ended up at about the same elevation as we started, but there was a steep climb of about 800 feet near the end, followed by a steep descent.
johnmcdonald > On Monday we rode from Ennis to West Yellowstone via US 287. The first 50 miles were gently uphill, with a headwind. Here's a bridge with swallow nests underneath.
